You've landed on the Sukiru documentation.
We hope you can find answers to any questions you may have about the system but if you find yourself
unable to get the information you need please don't hesitate to contact us and we'll try our
best to help.
If you think anything is inaccurate in the docs (even a spelling mistake) or maybe we need to be a little more descriptive on a particular subject then get in touch and help us to make this area of the system as good as it can be.
What is the Sukiru app?
At its' core the app is a tool for tattooists and cosmetic artists to track the inks/pigments they use day to day on their clients.
It allows you to add the inks you use and create client sessions where you can select the specific inks used.
Over time you can view what inks have been used accross a clients sessions, make notes on what colours worked or how they healed.
All the while in the background the app checks to ensure the inks you're using don't have any recall alerts against them, aren't past their
expiry dates or have been open too long which makes them more susceptible to bacterial contamination.
All these things make our jobs safer for us, and our clients.
Part of that involves keeping links to ink related documents and Safety Data Sheets up to date. If you'd like to help out with the updkeep of the data and have a few hours to spare every week then please drop us an email.
There will always be a free version of the app. That's our first priority. We've designed the system with keeping costs down as much as possible, utilising open source software, minimising our usuage of cloud servers and storage costs. To that end our initial version (and one that will always exists) is a 'sovereign' version.
What that means :
Your data- We don't store your data on our cloud server.
- All client and ink data you enter is stored on your mobile device, we've built in the ability for you to backup your data to your own online storage, encrypted of course, and restore it should you lose or get a new device. In general phones back this information up anyway such as Google Drive or iCloud, but we allow you to backup on demand to anywhere your phone has access to.
- You get to choose how often you back up your data in your Settings
- You data is encrypted, only your login has access to your data, on or off your device.
- Owning your data is a good thing, too many apps track your every move, use your data to build a profile of you, and then sell you out to advertisers. We only track diagnostic info (errors) and app usuage (is a feature being used)
- If it becomes apparent that a lot of users would prefer us to back up the data, we'll consider the options, but the price you pay when owning your own data is ensuring timely backups.
Note
As it's a community project we always welcome requests for features, new ideas or ways to make things better and easier to use in the app. We rely on community feedback.
How it evolved
With an interest in the inks we use, we've been following regulations and proposed legislation on inks for quite a few years now.
A major reason for the new legislation coming out is due to recall alerts raised by organisations that perform random tests on the inks
or the ink manufacturers recalling their products. This has had a major impact on our industry, both tattooing and cosmetic makeup.
The EU has been working on new proposed regulations for years now, the UK are following suit (although a little less restrictive) and the USA now looks to introduce MoCRA (Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act) which will no doubt have an impact on both industries.
With experience in software development and lockdowns providing a lot of free time, we decided to create a system for logging the inks we use.
Initially it started out as a web app but the deeper we got into it the more it became apparent a mobile app would be a better way forward, if only for the increase loading speeds (some ink brands have over 300 inks!).
We didn't really hear much from manufacturers about recalled products so thought we'd best take it upon ourselves to track the inks we use.
We also felt developing the system ourselves would allow for input from the community for further development.
There's a lot still to do but everything has to start somewhere. We hope as the system evolves we can add more features and build more of a community, allow more voices to be heard and provide a central hub for linking information and making access to this information easier.
We're also hoping to grow as a team with members of the community coming forward to help out by submitting news, adding new inks and keeping the data current. If you'd like to help, let us know (there's no cash in it, sorry).
Who are we?
We're a really small team, tattooists by trade but with software development knowledge. We have friends that tattoo and work with PMU and as the inks and pigments are being subject to the same regulations we decided to work both into the app.
We currently fund the project ourselves and share dev, testing, admin between us, nothing fancy.
We don't get sidetracked by individual promotion, we want the app to speak for itself and the focus to be on making it better.
We'll look to launch it in different languages, streamline the data and admin associated with the app and keep costs as low as possible.
When we're not tattooing/designing, we're working on the app. As things move forward and the codebase stabilises we'll look to split the time more equally.
